OSU Medical Center Ranked in Record 13 Specialties by U.S. News

Posted 7/8/2005

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University Medical Center has achieved a personal best in the latest “America’s Best Hospitals” issue of U.S. News & World Report magazine, with 13 specialties recognized as among the best in the country.

OSU Medical Center recognized by U.S.News & World Reports

This is an increase from last year, when nine OSU Medical Center specialties were ranked, and the prior year, when six were ranked.

OSU Medical Center programs recognized as being among the best in the country are: cancer, digestive disorders, geriatrics, gynecology, heart and heart surgery, hormonal, kidney disease, neurology/neurosurgery, orthopedics, respiratory, rehabilitation, urology, and ears, nose and throat.

Dr. Fred Sanfilippo, senior vice president and executive dean for health sciences, dean of the College of Medicine and Public Health, and CEO of OSU Medical Center, said the increased recognition of Ohio State medical specialties mirrors the strategic growth of the medical center itself.

“These rankings represent an important measure of the quality of patient care at the Medical Center and its synergy with the growth in our research and education endeavors,” Sanfilippo said. “We are delighted this recognition of our clinical programs parallels our growth in research funding and the quality of our medical education programs.”

OSU Medical Center’s consistent appearance on the national list for more than a decade reflects the quality of staff working throughout the medical center, said Peter Geier, CEO of the OSU Health System. “This recognition extends to all of our employees, whose commitment to the best possible patient experience is demonstrated in countless ways every day,” he said.

Dr. Douglas Rund, chair of emergency medicine and president of OSU Physicians Inc., added, “Creation of a unified practice plan for more than 550 faculty-physicians at Ohio State has helped align our various specialties with each other and the research and education mission of the Medical Center. As had been expected, this has improved the quality of patient care, and is nicely reflected by U.S. News & World Report.”

The “America’s Best Hospitals” issue, considered by many consumers and health care industry analysts as a leading indicator of quality care and performance, is compiled using data collected annually from more than 6,000 U.S. hospitals. This year, information was collected for 17 medical specialties. Only 176 institutions were recognized in the final lists.

Hospitals selected for the magazine’s rankings are institutions of varying sizes around the country. Measurements such as mortality data, staffing levels, reputation and technology are used to compile the final lists.

“America’s Best Hospitals” appears in the July 18 issue, which will be on newsstands next week.

The Ohio State University’s academic medical center includes the College of Medicine and Public Health, OSU Physicians and the OSU Health System, comprising University Hospital, James Cancer Hospital, University Hospital East, OSU Harding, Ross Heart Hospital and a network of community care sites. OSU Physicians, the practice plan of the OSU Medical Center, is composed of more than 550 regular faculty in the College of Medicine and Public Health who provide high-quality and coordinated health care to Medical Center patients.

The Ohio State University Medical Center has consistently been named one of America’s best hospitals by U.S. News & World Report magazine. Also, in the nationally acclaimed directory of “Best Doctors in America,” 145 of the 182 central Ohio doctors on the list are affiliated with OSU Medical Center.
